I am who God says I am | Sheilla Akwara

Pivoting can be a scary thing because where does one begin? Imagine living your life thinking it’s supposed to go one way (and being sure of it), and then one day, everything changes. Well, that’s what happened to me. It’s incredible how God steered me into WHO I AM today.

I AM.

These powerful words were uttered to Moses – see below:

“Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” - Exodus 3:14

For years I allowed many negative statements to speak over me, hence the depression. As I look at this I AM statement, I wonder what words are hovering over you? What ideas define you? Because if you’re not careful, these will steer you to a place God never sent or designed for you. These statements have other plans and desires for you.

Each word contains an instruction. When you understand this, you will start to discard every negative word you’ve held on to. You’ll begin to demolish every argument.

ARGUMENTS. Negative words bring arguments and unsettling thoughts, making you ponder and think deeply about wrong things. Do you see how you have debates within yourself? Look at how many years you’ve spent in your head thinking about who YOU’RE NOT instead of who YOU ARE.

casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”
2 Corinthians 10:5-6

You see, when you meditate on the wrong things, it will build itself in you and give you the wrong directions. I was headed the wrong way. I was trying to connect with people in the secular music industry, night and day. I said I just need one connection, and if I have to go out clubbing to get them, I’ll do it. When I went through deliverance, I was like – “what just happened? Who am I?”. By now, you’ve read my story in the previous email I sent you. (Thank you for indulging in that long email). Deliverance brought about the NEW me. I stopped chasing people for connections and started waiting for God’s timing and instructions. He wired a new code in me.

God said, “I rescued you so you can help my people.” I was shocked! Me? How? Now I see how Moses felt – so unworthy that he got selected [Exodus 4]. I told God if this was what He had for me, then He should strengthen my hands, for where else will I go?

I then started Jenga Africa, a mental wellness space for young people in Africa. Do you see how my challenges evolved into solutions for others? God began to open doors for me. I even had a chance to speak at the United Nations General Assembly. Me? How? I was amazed. Who knew? I never imagined such great doors could open for me – but they did. I have met many great, influential people that I never thought I would – all because God’s love and mercy redirected me.

I wonder what God has in store for you. I don’t know what it is, but I know it’s great. I don’t know where He’s taking you, but I know it’s great.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” – Ephesians 3:20

So, one day, as I sat on my couch, it dawned on me. This was my calling. Wow! Use my gift to help others. I hope my blogs, books, and services will provide you with healing, peace, direction, growth, clarity, love, and hope in this ever-changing world. More than anything, I hope that you will find yourself, and I pray that God will establish His purpose in you – in Jesus’ name

Food for thought:

  1. What statements have you allowed to speak over you?
